Technical Support to Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Information Resources Management

MANDEX researches advanced techniques for  video and other data transmission requirements such as electronic data  interchange for extremely large documentation files form the NRC Technology Advancement Board. These efforts have required in-depth considerations of telecommunication interfaces with the internet and future developments in broadband and fiber optic technologies. We developed a remote telecommunications UNIX workstation application design using ISDN 128K bandwidth. The requirement was to access to the internet from remote sites to transfer large amounts of information NRC is placing in the public domain via the internet and web browsers.

We support a software development team whose purpose is to maintain a large document retrieval system which is an application of integrated commercial off the shelf products which includes Oracle database, Verity Topic full text indexing and retrieval software, and Visix Galaxy Graphical User Interface integration tool. CDOCS is C and Pro C application that is implemented as a client/server concept using Remote Procedure Calls embedded in the Solaris 5.5.1 operating system on the UNIX  Ethernet network of clients and server and the FTP Onnet product on the PC client  token ring network. Maintenance task includes modifying the Oracle database tables, creating export files  for other agencies, importing data from other agencies, changing embedded SQL Pro C  programs, system administration such as sharing file systems, adding users and clients, backups, network troubleshooting, modifying the look and feel of the GUI client, and maintaining the documentation. The task includes configuration management of source code using RCS and operating an online internal home page for user information and collecting trouble  reports and user requests for enhancement.

MANDEX has supported an agency wide LAN/WAN that links its ten offices in the Wash DC area, five regional offices around the country, and links with power reactor sites, the National Institute of Health (NIH), and several national laboratories. MANDEX provides software engineers and database documentation specialists to conduct the following range of tasking:

  • technical assistance on evaluation of advanced networking and computing technologies,
  • evaluate cost /operational impacts of proposed new initiatives to LAN/WAN environments,
  • support NRC's WWW on the internet and set up MOSAIC prototype on a WWW server and
  • address issues of electronic data exchange.
